Preparing for Spiritual Warfare

Renewal of Baptismal Promises

[The Renewal of Baptismal Promises is a powerful weapon against the devil. Everyone ought to renew these promises regularly. Those under demonic harassment should renew these promises daily. Two versions are offered: 1) when someone leads the prayer; 2) if renewing promises alone.]

I reject Satan.

And all his works.

And all his empty promises.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, my Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the universal Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

God, the all-powerful Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and forgiven all our sins. May he also keep us faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ for ever and ever.  Amen.

Prayer of Victory

Loving heavenly Father, I praise you that Satan is a defeated foe. I rejoice that his defeat was accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ in his sinless life, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension into glory. I look forward to that day when the Lord Jesus Christ rules, while Satan is bound in the bottomless pit. I know that Satan ultimately will be forever consigned to the lake of fire prepared for him and his angels. I rejoice that you have given to me, in my union with the Lord Jesus Christ, complete victory over Satan today. By faith, I express my desire to abide in the protection and blessing of the mighty name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I pray the omnipotent power of his name over my family, and over all you have given me and called me to do. I pray the name of the Lord Jesus Christ against Satan and all that his kingdom would do to hinder God’s plan for my life.

I enter into my victory aggressively and claim my place as more than a conqueror (Rom. 8:37) through him that loved me. I refuse to admit continuing defeat by Satan in any area of my life. He cannot and will not rule over me. I am dead with Christ to his rule.

I praise you for the Cross and the death of the Lord Jesus Christ, desiring all the benefits of his death to focus upon my life, my family, and over all that you have given me and called me to do. I affirm that my death with Christ can defeat the control and rule of sin, of death, and of Satan. I desire the shed blood of Christ to be against all that Satan is doing to hinder me. Grant to me the grace to affirm your victory even when experiences of life seem to say otherwise. Grant to me the wisdom to know that the fierceness of the battle is not evidence of defeat.

I thank you for each phase of all battles that I may and will experience and I thank you for all that you are seeking to accomplish in your wisdom and design for my life. I accept the battles and rejoice in your purpose. I willingly accept and desire to profit from all of your purpose in letting Satan’s kingdom get at me, for I know that except by the volition of my will and flesh Satan cannot come through the wall and hedge of protection you erect for your children without your express consent and will. (see “Job”) I reject all of Satan’s purpose. I thank you for what you are doing by allowing Satan’s kingdom to war against me. Use the battle to refine, to deepen, to mature, to humble, and to build my faith.

Grant to me the insight and understanding to know my victory. I desire that the roots of my assurance of victory would go down deeply into the essential doctrines of your Word. I want to see myself as being invincibly strong through my union with Christ, the Person and work of the Holy Spirit, the wholeness of your provided armor, the allness of prayer, and the communion of loyalty and obedience to your Church and Magisterium. Teach me how to appropriate my victory in a practical, daily practice.

Through the victory of my Lord and Savior, I stand resolute and strong upon the certainty of my victory. In confidence, I look to You, Lord Jesus Christ. Humbly I use the authority of my union with Christ to pull down all of Satan’s strongholds and all of his plans formed against me personally, against my family, and against God’s appointed plan for my life.

I deliberately submit my life and apostolate to your Lordship and to the guidance of your One, Holy, Apostolic Church. I acknowledge that everything that is good about my life, home, and all that you have given me and called me to do is because of your lordship and gracious blessing. By faith, I claim my invincible right to be strong and victorious in your complete salvation. I refuse to be discouraged. I reject all emotions that make me feel defeated. I choose to live as one who is more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ my Lord.

When your purpose for each of the trials that come into my life is fulfilled, I know that it shall fade into the dimness of forgotten battles and a defeated enemy. Through the precious name of the Lord Jesus Christ, with all thanksgiving, and with the intercessions of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Blessed St. Michael the Archangel, the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, Sts. Benedict and Padre Pio, my Guardian Angel, and all the Saints and Angels of Heaven, it shall be so. Amen.

Prayer for Filling of The Holy Spirit

[This prayer should also be said after the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is wise to say it daily or at least regularly in addition.]

Lord Jesus Christ, I want to belong to You from now on. I want to be free from the dominion of darkness and the rule of Satan.  I want to enter into Your Kingdom and be part of Your people. I will turn away from all sin, and I will avoid everything that leads me to wrongdoing. I ask You to forgive all the sins I have committed. Come into my heart as my personal Savior and Lord. I offer my life to You, and I promise to obey You as my Lord and Master. I ask You to fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer To Put On The Armor Of God

[This prayer should be said daily.]

“…put on God’s armor so as to be able to resist the devil’s tactics.” I stand my ground “with truth buckled around my waist and integrity for a breastplate…” I carry the “shield of faith” to “put out the burning arrows of the evil one …” I accept “salvation from God to be my helmet and receive the word of God from the Spirit to use as a sword” (Eph. 6:10, 11, 14, 16, 17 NAS)

Prayer to St. Michael for Protection

Ant.: I will give thanks to You with all my heart, O Lord; (Ps. 138:1) in the sight of the angels I will sing Your praises.

V.: Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,

R.: That we may not perish in the dreadful judgment.

Let us pray.  Holy Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, † and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer to our Guardian Angel to Watch Over Us

Our Father in heaven has given each of us an angel. Hebrews 1:14 puts the doctrine in its clearest light: “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for them, who shall receive the inheritance of salvation?” In this view, the function of the guardian angel is to lead men to the Kingdom of Heaven.”

We may pray for guidance, protection, and comfort from our Guardian Angel. He is our constant companion and protector. We are not to name our Guardian Angel for they already have a name given to them by God. Our Guardian Angel is not a pet, but a person assigned to us by God to minister to us. Thank God he has given us such a great guardian and friend.

Prayer #1

My good Angel,
Thou comest from heaven;
God has sent thee to take care of me.
Oh, shelter me under thy wings.
Lighten my path, direct my steps.
Do not leave me,
stay quite near me
and defend me against the spirit of evil.
But above all come to my help
in the last struggle of my life.
Deliver my soul so that with thee it may praise,
love and contemplate the goodness of God
forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer #2 (includes petition for our children)

Heavenly Father, Your infinite love for us has chosen a blessed angel in heaven and appointed him our guide during this earthly pilgrimage. Accept our thanks for so great a blessing.

Grant that we may experience the assistance of our holy protector in all our necessities. And you, holy, loving angel and guide, watch over us with all the tenderness of your angelic heart. Keep us always on the way that leads to heaven, and cease not to pray for us until we have attained our final destiny, eternal salvation. Then we shall love You for all eternity. We shall praise and glorify You unceasingly for all the good You have done for us while here on earth.

Especially be a faithful and watchful protector of our children. Take our place, and supply what may be wanting to us through human frailty, short-sightedness, or sinful neglect. Lighten, O you perfect servants of God, our heavy task. Guide our children, that they may become like unto Jesus, may imitate Him faithfully, and persevere till they attain eternal life. Amen.

Prayer #3

O most holy angel of God,
appointed by God to be my guardian,
I give you thanks for all the benefits
which you have ever bestowed on me
in body and in soul.
I praise and glorify you
that you condescended to assist me
with such patient fidelity,
and to defend me against all the assaults of my enemies.
Blessed be the hour in which
you were assigned me for my guardian,
my defender and my patron.
In acknowledgment and return
for all your loving ministries to me,
I offer you the infinitely precious
and noble heart of Jesus,
and firmly purpose to obey you henceforward,
and most faithfully to serve my God. Amen.

Doctrinal Affirmation Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, † and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

I, ______________________________, do hereby declare and affirm my Christian faith in these following Doctrinal Affirmations:

I recognize that there is only one true and living God (Ex. 20:2, 3) who exists as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and that He is worthy of all honor, praise, and glory as the Creator, Sustainer, and the Beginning and End of all things (Rev. 4:11; 5:9, 10; Isa 43:1, 7, 21)

I recognize Christ as the Messiah, the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us (Jn 1: 1,14). I believe that He came to redeem mankind, to offer us a way to freedom from darkness through salvation by the merits of His work on the Cross. I believe that in Christ all works of Satan are destroyed (1 Jn 3:8), that He disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public display of them, having triumphed over them (Col 2:15).

I believe that God has proven His love for me because when I was still a sinner, Christ died for me (Rom 5:8). I believe that He delivered me from the domain of darkness and transferred me to His kingdom, and in Him I have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Col. 1:13, 14).

I believe that I am a child of God (1 Jn. 3:103) and that I am seated with Christ in the heavenlies (Eph. 2:6). I believe that I was saved by the grace of God through faith, that is was a gift and not the result of my own efforts or merits (Eph 2:8).

I choose to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might (Eph 6:10). I put no confidence in the flesh (Phil 3:3) for the weapons of warfare are not of the flesh (2 Cor. 10:4). I put on the whole armor of God (Eph. 6:10-20), and I resolve to stand firm in my faith and to resist the evil one.

I believe that Jesus Christ has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matt 28:18) and that He is the head over all rule and authority (Col 2:10). I believe that Satan and his demons and wicked spirits are subject to the Lord Jesus Christ and therefore to me in Christ since I am a member of Christ’s body (Eph 1:19-23).

I believe that apart from Christ I can do nothing (Jn 15:5) so I declare my dependence upon Him.

I choose to abide in Christ in order to bear much fruit and to glorify the Lord (Jn 15:8)and to accomplish the work of sanctification that Christ began in me through the Cross (James 2).

I believe that since I am a member go God’s royal family I have the authority, in the name of Christ Jesus, to ask the Father to command the devil and his minions to leave my presence, as I obey the command to resist the devil (James 4:7).

Therefore I announce to all the universe, of men and of angels, of all creatures great and small, and to the infernal creatures below, that Jesus Christ is my Lord (1 Cor 12:3), and that I reject any counterfeit gifts or works of Satan and his minions in my life.

I believe that the truth will set me free (Jn 8:32) and that walking in the light is the only path of fellowship and freedom (1 Jn 1:7). Therefore, as a royal member of God’s household, I stand against Satan’s deceptions by affirming all the doctrines of the Faith and by taking every thought captive in obedience to Christ (2 Cor 10:5).

I declare that the Bible and the Magisterial Church are the only authoritative standards of our Faith (2 Tim 3:15, 16).

I choose to speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15).

I choose to present my body as an instrument of righteousness, a living and holy sacrifice, and thus I renew my mind daily by the living Word of God in order that I may prove that the will of God is good, acceptable, and perfect (Rom 6:13; 12:1, 2).

I ask my heavenly Father to fill me with His Holy Spirit (Eph 5:18), to lead me into all truth (Jn 16:13), and to empower my life that I may live above sin and not carry out the desires of the flesh (Gal 5:16). I crucify the flesh (Gal 5:24) and choose to walk by the Spirit.

In making all these doctrinal affirmations that go deep into the holy doctrines of the Faith, I renounce all selfish goals and choose the ultimate goal of love (1 Tim 1:5). I choose to obey the greatest commandment to love the Lord my God will all my heart, soul, and mind, and to love my neighbor as myself (Matt 22:37-39). Amen.

Profession of Faith

Eternal God, I bow before you in a sincere and honest confession that I am a sinner and that I have sinned against you. I repent of my sin and apologize to you for all I have done. I completely surrender to your authority as revealed to us in the Holy Scriptures and by your One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Because of your holy Word, Lord Jesus, I do receive you into my life as my Lord and Savior. I believe in you and accept you as my forgiveness, cleansing, righteousness, and eternal life. I also make my allegiance to be loyal and obedient to your Church and to your appointed Vicar, the Pope, and to the Magisterium in union with him. I want to thank you for making all of this possible. In Jesus name, Amen. (Luke 13:3; Acts 17:30; Jn. 1:12; 3:16-18, 36; 5:14; 8:24; Rom. 5:1; 8:1; 10:9, 10; 1 Jn. 1:9; Rev. 3:20)

I now make the decision, Lord Jesus, to receive you as my sanctification as my cleansing from sin, and ask you, blessed Holy Spirit, to apply to me the work of the crucifixion. Cleanse me from my pride, hypocrisy, lust, selfishness, doubt, jealousy and all that is unpleasing to you. In cooperation with and dependence upon you, I make the decision of faith to “put away the old self” (Eph. 4:22; Rom. 6:1-22; 1 Cor. 1:30; Gal. 5:6-21; Col. 3:1-17).

I now make the decision, Lord Jesus, to receive you as my glorification, as my enablement to live above sin each moment by moment. I ask you, blessed Holy Spirit, to apply to me the work of the Resurrection so that I may walk in newness of life. I sincerely desire to have humility, honesty, purity, love, faith, and longsuffering in my daily life. In co-operation with and dependence upon you, I make the decision to “put on the new self” and take on a renewed mind that is in Christ Jesus (Eph. 4:24; Rom. 6:1-4; Gal. 5:22-26).

I now make the decision, Lord Jesus, to receive you as my deliverance from Satan, and by faith, I take my position with you in the heavenlies. I ask you, blessed Holy Spirit, to apply to me the work of the Ascension. I wholly surrender to You and, in the name of Jesus Christ, take my stand against all satanic influence and subtlety. In cooperation with the dependence upon you, I make the decision of faith to resist the devil (Eph. 1:17-23; 2:1-6; 4:27; 6:10-18; Col. 1:13; Heb. 2:14, 15; Jam. 4:7; 1 Pet. 5:8, 9).

I now make the decision to receive you, blessed Holy Spirit, as my anointing for every area of my life. I ask you, in all sincerity, to bring my character and life into full conformity to the person of Jesus Christ and to the will of God. Please work with me so that Jesus Christ may be glorified and the fruit of your presence will be seen in my life. In cooperation with my dependence upon you, I make the decision of faith to be “filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18; Jn 7:37-39; 14:16, 17, 26; 15:26, 27; 16:7-15; Acts 1:8; 2:33; Rom. 8:1-17).

Having made this confession and these decisions of faith, I now take as my own Your promised rest for my life. I relax in the trust of faith knowing that in the moment of temptation, trial, or need, You will be there to be my strength and sufficiency (Heb. 4:1-13; 1 Cor. 10:13). Amen.

Prayer for the Spirit’s Filling

Lord Jesus Christ, I want to belong to you from now on. I want to be free from the dominion of darkness and the rule of Satan, and I want to enter into your Kingdom and be part of your people. I will turn away from all sin, and I will avoid everything that leads me to sin and wrongdoing. Thank you for forgiving all the sins I have committed and for the Sacrament of Confession that allows me to reconcile with You when I fall.

You came into my life through Baptism and Confirmation, you bring me back to Yourself through Confession when I sin, and you allow me the most profound intimacy with you through your Real Presence in the Eucharist. Thank you Lord Jesus for giving me, a sinner, such a great grace and love.

Because I love you and want always to be with you as my beloved, I now renew my baptismal promises to reject Satan and all his works and all his empty promises. I now ask you to come into my heart in a very personal way that I may commune with you deeply and intimately. I offer my life to You, and I promise to obey you as my Lord and Master. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer of Renunciation Concerning the Sins of Ancestors

As a child of God purchased by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, I here and now renounce and repudiate all the sins of my ancestors and other family members. As one who has been delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear Son, I cancel out all curses, spells, hexes, or other demonic workings that have been passed on to me from my ancestors or from other family members. As one who as been crucified with Jesus Christ and raised to walk in newness of life, I cancel every curse, spell, hex or other evil matter that may have been put upon me. I announce to Satan and all his forces that Christ became a curse for me when he hung on the Cross. As one who has been crucified and raised with Christ and now sits with him in heavenly places, I renounce any and every way in which Satan may claim ownership of me. I declare myself to be eternally and completely signed over and committed to the Lord Jesus Christ. All this I do in the name and by the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ, with the intercessions of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Blessed St. Michael the Archangel, the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, Sts. Benedict, Basil, Padre Pio, Bruno, Dymphna, and my Guardian Angel, and all the Saints and Angels of Heaven. Amen. (Rom. 6:4; Gal. 2:20; 3:13; Eph. 1:7; 2:5-6; Col. 1:13)
